Automotive Maintenance Introduction

March 23rd, 2008 by admin

Automotive maintenance put simply is spending pennies in the short term to save dollars in the long term. By keeping a car’s most vital components lubricated and clean as well as replacing automotive components which are designed to wear (tires, brake pads, belts) , you will have a longer lasting, more dependable automobile.

Here are some of the most common maintenance item on vehicles today:

  • Cabin Air Filter
  • Engine Air Filter
  • Fuel Filter
  • Serpentine Belt (Accessory Drive Belt)

These are just a few common automotive maintenance items but can all save you money. A great example of a car maintenance item saving you money is the fuel filter.

The fuel filter is located on the frame or under body near the fuel tank. This is not a very convenient place if you do not have a vehicle on a hoist so is commonly forgotten by most drivers. Some people will drive vehicles with the original fuel filter until problems occur; 50k, 60k or more. Most fuel filter replacements should be performed every 15,000 miles.

Vehicles with the restricted fuel filter may simply start developing performance problems, turn the check engine light on or both. The worst case scenario is fuel pump failure. The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. Fuel pump failure can be caused by excessive restriction in the fuel supply line. The pressure on tank side of the fuel filter may have to reach 70 to 90 psi to maintain operating fuel pressures of 40 to 60 psi to the fuel rail and injectors. The restriction puts too much of a load on the fuel pump rotor and causes the fuel pump to overheat potentially resulting in failure. Fuel pump replacement can cost as much as $900.

Replacing the fuel filter is a simple, inexpensive repair. A clean fuel filter keeps foreign material from clogging your fuel injectors and allows fuel to flow easily from the fuel pump to the fuel rail and injectors. So remember, reducing stress on the fuel pump will reduce stress on the driver.
